At BioMarin they find cures for rare genetic diseases. They target rare genetic diseases. In the bioreactors, they grow cells, They use proteins instead of chemicals. They give the cells what they need to grow healthfully, oxygen, heat, and sugars as food. CHO stands for Chinese Hamster Ovaries. Then there is analytical chemistry. They used spectrophometer to graph the cells. They create drugs for Lysosomal Storage Diseases. A special defvice they use is called the Laminar Flow Hood, it keeps the work sterile. In protein purification, they insert the gene into the protein. One piece of informantion they gave us was the description of parts of the cell. The Lysosomes are the part of the cell that recycles dead cell things. The HPLC would purify the cells. It would separate the negative and positive charged cells. An autoclave is a device used for sterilization and kills all the bacteria using water and heat. What I liked most about the tour was all the machinery they used that I got to see. It was very exciting to see the scientists at work and actively using the machines. It was cool to see the scientists using the micropipets in the biotech lab because we also used them. I would love to learn more about the growing cells. I would like to get more in depth with the concept. I can't wait to learn more about this very entertaining and informative station.
