Disease/Therapy Research: The four diseases that our group chose were diabetes, the common cold, elephantiasis, and schizophrenia. The causes of these four disease are, respectively: a lack of insulin, bacteria infiltrating the body, and parasites in the body. Regarding schizophrenia the cure is unknown but potentially attributed to genetics. The potential therapeutic solutions for diabetes are pancreas implants and machines that monitor insulin/glucagon levels and secrete the hormones accordingly. Due to the nature of the common cold, the only way to truly get rid of it is to make the body completely hostile to all foreign particles, but because this could cause more issues than just eliminating a cold. Instead, more potent vaccines could be created and perhaps there is a way to better stimulate the autoimmune system. Cognitive-behavioral therapy in schizophrenia was originally developed to provide additional treatment for residual symptoms, drawing on the principles and intervention strategies previously developed for anxiety and depression. General treatment of Elephantiasis includes bed rest, elevation of affected limbs and wrapping the limbs in compression bandages. This helps to bring down the swelling. In the United states, the drug of choice is diethylcarbamazine or DEC, which kills the microfilariae and also some adult worms.
